Rhode Island School of Design Residency
The Silk Road Ensemble

During a series of three visits to Providence during the spring semester, Silk Road Ensemble members will collaborate with RISD faculty and students on a multidisciplinary exploration of visual art and narrative. Students in the “Folk Tales in the Digital Age” class will examine traditional folktales from regions along the historic Silk Road, retelling ancient stories through contemporary media for a modern audience. In collaboration with the Silk Road Project, students will investigate writing, illustrating, music and performance through individual and group projects. The Silk Road Ensemble will perform for the RISD community on April 6 and 7.

Spring 2008

The Stanford Program on International and Cross-Cultural Education (SPICE) releases The Road to Beijing Curriculum & DVD in partnership with the Silk Road Project.

  • April 27, 3 & 5:30 pm – The Adventures of Prince Achmed at Suntory Hall, Tokyo

The Silk Road Ensemble and Yo-Yo Ma present two concert programs in five cities throughout Japan. At The American School in Tokyo, the Silk Road Ensemble will also present a workshop for students, sponsored by American Express. Ending the concert tour will be two full-length performances of The Adventures of Prince Achmed, a 1926 classic animated film, presented with a new score written and performed live by the Silk Road Ensemble.

The Silk Road Ensemble will give the opening performance for a new arts festival, Westobou Festival, at the Grover C. Maxwell Performing Arts Theatre at Augusta State University.

Persian Music Performance

Featuring Iranian kamancheh player and composer Kayhan Kalhor, the Silk Road Ensemble with Yo-Yo Ma will perform as part of a special Persian music performance, A Celebration of Rumi: The Sights & Sounds of Mystic Persia.
